The Congress on Saturday accused the government of “mismanagement” at the last rites of former PM Manmohan Singh who was cremated with full state honours at Nigambodh Ghat here.

Congress media and publicity cell chairman Pawan Khera alleged the arrangements displayed a lack of respect for the former PM and his family. He said the official broadcaster, Doordarshan, was the only media outlet allowed to cover the funeral. “It focused disproportionately on the PM and Home Minister Amit Shah, neglecting the coverage of Singh’s family during the proceedings,” Khera alleged.

The Congress leader claimed that only three chairs were initially reserved in the front row for the late PM’s family. It was after insistence of Congress leaders that more chairs were arranged for the family. Khera also spoke against the “failure” of government officials, including the PM, to stand during the ceremonial handing over of the Tricolour to Singh’s widow or during the gun salute.

Besides, Singh’s grandchildren had to struggle to reach the pyre during the rituals, Khera alleged.

The Congress leader also alleged that Shah’s motorcade caused disruption by blocking the funeral procession and left family members stranded outside the venue.

Diplomats attending the funeral also faced inconvenience, claimed Khera, adding that they were seated away from the main area. The PM remained seated even when the King of Bhutan stood as a mark of respect, he said.
