On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's Jayanti, BJP MP Kangana Ranaut ignited controversy with her Instagram post, which seemingly targeted the legacy of the Father of the Nation. In her message, she stated, “देश के पिता नहीं देश के तो लाल होते हैं। धन्य हैं भारत माँ के ये लाल,” referring to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri as a “son of Bharat Mata”. This statement has drawn sharp criticism as it appears to undermine Gandhi's pivotal role in India's freedom struggle.

While the nation celebrated Gandhi's contributions and ideals, Ranaut's post was interpreted by many as a deliberate attempt to diminish Gandhi’s stature, further escalating the ongoing discourse surrounding his legacy. Critics argue that her remarks reflect a growing trend within a certain political circles to redefine historical narratives.

The backlash against Ranaut has been swift, with leaders from the opposition parties condemning her comments. They argue that such statements not only distort history, but also undermine the values of non-violence and unity that Gandhi championed.

This incident follows her recent controversial remarks regarding farmers' bills, for which she faced criticism from both within her party and the public. After receiving backlash, Ranaut had issued an apology, but her latest comments have reignited the debate.

Political analysts suggest that this incident may further polarise opinions around the BJP's approach to historical figures and their legacies. As social media continues to amplify such controversies, it remains to be seen how this will impact the political landscape and Ranaut's standing within her party.
