The National Testing Agency (NTA) is planning a rejig in the third edition of Common University Entrance Test (CUET)-UG by conducting the exam in hybrid mode using optical mark recognition (OMR) sheets and computer-based test. The NTA will also discontinue normalisation of scores.

M Jagadesh Kumar, chairman, University Grants Commission (UGC), said in order to alleviate exam stress, the NTA would also expand the number of examination centres for the CUET-UG exam.

He said the hybrid mode of examination would benefit students in the rural areas.

“The move will also ensure that most of the students get a chance to take the exam in a city of their choice. With the hybrid mode of examination, candidates from less urbanised regions can participate in the examination centre closer to their homes. It will ensure that geographical constraints do not hinder the students’ educational aspirations in rural areas. The NTA is working on the possibility of conducting papers with a large registration in the OMR mode,” he said. Kumar said the difficulty level in the exams would be moderate which would reduce students’ dependence on coaching centres. The UGC chairman said the exam for a subject on a single day would eliminate the need for normalisation of scores.
