The government has decided to confer the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award on leading actor Mohanlal.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting made the announcement on Saturday.

In a statement the ministry said, “On the recommendation of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award Selection Committee, the Government of India is pleased to announce that Mohanlal will be conferred the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2023.”

The official statement said Mohanlal’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations and the legendary actor, director, and producer is being honoured for his iconic contribution to Indian cinema.

“His unmatched talent, versatility, and relentless hard work have set a golden standard in Indian film history. The award will be presented at the 71st National Film Awards ceremony on September 23,” said the government.

An acclaimed actor, Mohanlal, is principally known for his contribution to Malayalam cinema. Born on May 21, 1960, in Kerala, he is widely acknowledged for his effortless acting, a rich repertoire of roles and a slew of achievements. Mohanlal has won five National Film Awards and India’s top civilian honours, Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan. He has to his credit 340 films.

An influential public figure in the poll-bound Kerala (Assembly elections are due in 2026) Mohanlal has conquered all genres of acting, gaining superstar status in South India.

Sharing a post on the development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Mohanlal ji epitomises excellence and versatility. With a rich body of work spanning decades, he stands as a leading light of Malayalam cinema and theatre and is deeply passionate about the culture of Kerala. He has also delivered remarkable performances in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Hindi films. His cinematic and theatrical brilliance across mediums is truly inspiring.”
