Vice Presidential election to be held on September 9

Stage is set for the election to the second-highest constitutional position of Vice President, with the Election Commission on Friday announcing the schedule.

Notification for the election will be issued on August 7, the last date for filing nominations will be August 21, the last date for scrutiny will be August 22, and the date of the poll, if necessary, will be September 9.

The last date for withdrawal of nominations, the EC said, would be August 25.

Polling will be held on September 9 if there is more than one candidate, and counting will be held on the same date.

With the announcement today, the EC has set the stage for the crucial election, as also for hectic discussions in both the opposition and the ruling camps.

The Opposition INDIA bloc has said it will put up a joint candidate.

The BJP is yet to commence discussions with allies on the issue, and sources said the discussions will be held next week.

Jagdeep Dhankhar took over as the fourteenth Vice President of India and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha on August 11, 2022. He had succeeded M. Venkaiah Naidu.

Prior to the oath-taking, Dhankhar visited Rajghat and paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi.

Dhankhar resigned on July 21, necessitating the poll.

The newly elected VP will have a full five-year term from the date of assuming charge.
