He urged youth to join the pool of astronauts India will soon create.

In a video address on National Space Day, Modi expressed his expectation that space startups will produce unicorns within the next five years. He stated that while India has reached the Moon and Mars, it has to take a peak in deep space to explore galaxies.

“We are coming up with a pool of astronauts soon. I invite youths to join this pool. For the youth there will be immense opportunity in the space sector. I would urge space startups to come up with unicorns in the next five years. Today we see 5-6 launches yearly and I hope we reach a point where we could launch one rocket,” he said.

The PM recalled that in 2023, India became the first country to have reached the South Pole of the moon and this year  it became the fourth country to have conducted undocking and docking of satellites in space.

PM Modi said Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla made the nation proud.

“Today, India is rapidly moving in semi-cryogenic engine and electric propulsion technologies. Beyond galaxies lies our horizon. We have reached the moon and Mars and now we have to explore deep space. Soon, thanks to the hard work of all you scientists, India will also launch the Gaganyaan mission...and in the coming times, India will build its own space station,” Modi said.

He said that under the BJP-led NDA government, the private sector was allowed to enter the space sector.

“In the last 11 years we have made several reforms in the space sector. Earlier there were several restrictions in the space sector. We allowed the private players in the sector. The PSLV rocket made by the private sector will soon be launched,” he said.

The PM said that space tech is becoming a part of governance in India.

“National Space Day has become an occasion of enthusiasm and fascination for our youth. This is a matter of pride for the country. Crop insurance schemes involve satellite-based assessments, fishermen are receiving information and safety through satellites. Whether it’s disaster management or the use of geospatial data in the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, today, India’s progress in space is making the lives of ordinary citizens easier,” he said.
