The Special Cell of the Delhi Police has been directed to investigate a new video released by proscribed outfit Sikh For Justice (SFJ) chief Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in which the ‘designated terrorist’ has purportedly threatened to target the Republic Day Parade on January 26 to prevent President Droupadi Murmu from unfurling the Tricolour.

In the video, also watched by The Tribune, Pannun is heard threatening the Indian government and asking the Delhi people not to send their children for the parade as “Khalistani vigilantes will perform an action”. The video was flagged by Delhi-based lawyer Vineet Jindal, who lodged a complaint with Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora.

“Pannu stated that a budget of $1,25,000 has been allocated by the SFJ for the attack,” the complaint read.

Jindal has demanded the registration of an FIR and steps to ensure the security of the top leaders. The Commissioner forwarded the complaint to the Special Cell for necessary action.

Pannun, who is based in Canada-US, has been running a movement against India for several years. Multiple times, anti-India graffiti has surfaced on several walls at public places in Delhi which were painted on Pannun’s commands. Even during the farmers’ agitation, he had released a number of videos asking people to attack government buildings, including the Red Fort.

Interestingly, Pannun on Monday was seen attending the swearing-in ceremony of Donald Trump, who took oath as the 47th president of the US. Videos of him chanting, “Khalistan Zindabad” merely metres away from Trump went viral on social media.

Notably, a high-powered committee probing inputs received from the US on an alleged plot to kill Pannun had just a few days before submitted its report and recommended legal action against “an individual”.

Though the Ministry did not identify the individual, it is learnt the person was Vikas Yadav, a former intelligence official. Yadav was indicted by the US Department of Justice in connection with the plot.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal had recently confirmed a notification issued by MHA banning SFJ for a period of five years.

The ruling followed the Union government’s declaration in July 2024 that SFJ remains an unlawful association, citing alarming evidence of its escalating anti-national activities.

As per the tribunal, SFJ’s unlawful activities have grown significantly, with the number of FIRs against the group rising from 11 in 2019 to a staggering 122 by 2024.

Additionally, SFJ’s campaign to incite mutiny within the Indian Army and its destructive attempts to disrupt national events, including the G20 Summit, were noted as major security concerns.
