New Delhi, August 21

Around 150 Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel are being deployed at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital following an order of the Supreme Court, official sources said on Wednesday.

A CISF team, led by DIG K Pratap Singh and an SP rank officer, have inspected the hospital. The force is expected to secure the resident doctors’ hostel and other facilities.

While ordering the CISF to take over the hospital’s security, the top court on Tuesday said, “In the aftermath of the brutal incident and the demonstrations which followed, the state government was expected to ensure the deployment of the state machinery to prevent a breach of law and order.”

“It was all the more necessary to do so since the investigation of the crime, which took place in the precincts of the hospital, was underway. We are unable to comprehend how the state was not prepared to deal with the incident of vandalism on the hospital premises,” the court added.
