EAM likely to visit Canada next week for G7 meet
While India is not a member of the G7 grouping, EAM is expected to participate as an invited partner
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is likely to visit Canada next week to attend the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting scheduled for November 11-12 in the Niagara region of Ontario, sources said on Wednesday.
While India is not a member of the G7 grouping, Jaishankar is expected to participate as an invited partner, with discussions likely to focus on pressing global issues, including the Indo-Pacific, Ukraine conflict and supply-chain resilience.
Sources said during the visit, Jaishankar is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and possibly call on Prime Minister Mark Carney in Ottawa. The two sides are likely to review the state of bilateral relations, trade ties and cooperation in energy and technology sectors.
The visit comes amid efforts to restore stability in India-Canada relations, which had soured over the past year. Diplomatic engagement between the two countries has seen gradual improvement in recent months, with both sides signalling readiness to “move forward constructively”, an official familiar with the development said. Further details of the minister’s itinerary and bilateral meetings are awaited.
