The Election Commission of India (ECI), recently criticised by the Congress and other opposition parties over alleged irregularities during the Haryana and Maharashtra Assembly elections, received praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday during his monthly radio programme, “Mann Ki Baat”, for its dedication to fair elections.

“January 25 is National Voters’ Day. This day is significant because it marks the establishment of the Election Commission of India. Our Constitution makers accorded a vital role to the EC in the democratic process, and people’s participation is equally crucial,” Modi said.

“I would also like to thank the EC, which has modernised and strengthened our voting process from time to time. The commission has used the power of technology to give more strength to the power of the people. I urge citizens to use their right to vote in maximum numbers and actively participate in strengthening democracy,” he added.

The PM also highlighted India’s progress in space technology, particularly the successful launch of the country’s first private satellite constellation, “Firefly”, by Bengaluru-based space-tech startup Pixxel. “This constellation, the world’s most advanced high-resolution hyperspectral satellite constellation, has not only positioned India as a leader in modern space technology but also taken a significant step towards a self-reliant India,” Modi said.

Additionally, Modi referred to the recent achievement of Indian scientists in space docking, a critical milestone in the space sector. “Our scientists recently accomplished space docking, where two spacecraft are connected in orbit. This technology is crucial for supplying space stations and conducting crewed missions. India is now the fourth country to achieve this feat,” he noted.
