Empuraan row an assault on freedom of speech: CPM
Alleging assault on freedom of speech and expression, CPM MP John Brittas on Wednesday raised the issue of Mohanlal-starrer ‘L2: Empuraan’ undergoing significant changes after its theatrical release, reportedly due to threats.
Bringing up the issue during zero hour, the Rajya Sabha member said, “Unfortunate incidents are happening in this country. There is an assault on freedom of speech and expression which is enshrined in the Constitution. I would just say that a movie, which was censored and released in theatres, was sent back to the Censor Board again. It then faced 24 cuts because of threats and even the movie’s protagonists were depicted as anti-national. If this situation remains, I fear that the freedom of speech and expression would be in peril,” he added.
Meanwhile, MoS for Minority Affairs George Kurien said the film was against the Christian faith, adding that the communists wanted to “insult every religion” in India.
