New Delhi, February 9

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud on Friday met Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and sought uninterrupted supply of essential commodities. Bangladesh depends heavily on India for essentials such as onions, wheat and rice, but temporary ban on exports by New Delhi lead to a sharp rise in domestic prices for these commodities.

“Mahmud met minister Piyush Goyal and requested India’s support in ensuring supply of essential commodities and further improving trade and commerce relations with India,” the Bangladesh foreign ministry posted on X.

Mahmud also called on President Droupadi Murmu, who told him that a strong, stable and prosperous Bangladesh was in India’s interest and there was immense political will on both sides to see the relationship grew.

Murmu conveyed felicitations to PM Sheikh Hasina for her unprecedented fourth consecutive term and hoped her leadership would guide Bangladesh to achieve new milestones of progress and prosperity. Mahmud also met National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and discussed ways and means of regional cooperation for ensuring regional security and maintaining greater stability in the region and beyond.
