Ex-Health Secy Sudan is UPSC chairperson

President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday accepted the resignation of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Chairman Manoj Soni and appointed Commission member Preeti Sudan as his successor. She will assume charge on Thursday. Sudan will hold the position till further orders or till April 29, 2025, whichever is earlier.
A former Union Health Secretary, Sudan is an IAS officer of 1983 batch from the Andhra Pradesh-cadre. She retired as Union Health Secretary in July 2020.
She led the ministry during the peak Covid situation and has vast experience of 37 years across all spheres of government administration.
Sudan earlier served in the women and child development and defence ministries. While serving in the state administration, she handled finance and planning, tourism and agriculture. She has done MPhil in economics and MSc in social policy and planning from the London School of Economics.
Sudan has a role in the initiation of two major flagship programmes of the country — Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and Ayushman Bharat, besides a legislation on the National Medical Commission, Allied Health Professionals Commission and ban of e-cigarettes. She had joined as member, UPSC on November 29, 2022.
