Former RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das appointed Principal Secretary-II to PM Modi

Former RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das who demitted office in December 2024 was on Saturday appointed the second Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet said Das’ appointment will be effective from the date he takes charge and his appointment will be co-terminus with the term of Prime Minister Modi.

Das will be the second Principal Secretary to Modi besides PK Mishra.

A 1980-batch IAS officer, Das earlier served as Secretary, Department of Revenue and Economic Affairs.

During his long tenure in the Finance Ministry, Das was involved in the preparation of eight Budgets.

He also played a major role in merging the tax regimes into GST, which came into force from July 1, 2017.

Later as RBI Governor, Das focused on economic stability, growth and reining inflation. He earned high praise for RBI’s role in addressing the economic impact of Covid-19.

Das had assumed charge as the 25th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India effective December 12, 2018.

Immediately prior to his RBI assignment, he was acting as Member, 15th Finance Commission, and G20 Sherpa of India.

Das has vast experience in various areas of governance in the last nearly four decades.

He has held important positions in the Central and state governments in the areas of finance, taxation, industries, infrastructure.

Das has also served as India’s Alternate Governor in the World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB), New Development Bank (NDB) and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). He has represented India in international fora like the IMF, G20, BRICS and SAARC.

He is a postgraduate from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University.

Meanwhile, the tenure of the government think tank NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam has also been extended by a year, beginning February 24, 2025. The retired IAS officer of the 1987 batch was appointed NITI Aayog CEO for two years in February 2023.
