The French Navy’s Carrier Strike Group, led by the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier FNS Charles de Gaulle and comprising other French naval ships, arrived in Goa on Saturday. The French flotilla is on a visit to India from January 3 to 9, with scheduled port calls at Goa and Kochi.
The Navy said, “This visit aims to enhance interoperability, foster mutual understanding and strengthen collaboration between the navy of two countries.” The carrier is accompanied by Rafale-M fighter jets, designed specifically for naval operations. India has signed a deal to purchase 26 Rafale-M jets.
The Indian Air Force also operates the Rafale, which is a non-marine version of the jet. Before India approved the acquisition of the Rafale-M, its manufacturer, Dassault Aviation, conducted tests at the Shore-Based Test Facility (SBTF) in Goa. The SBTF replicates the takeoff ramp of an aircraft carrier. Notably, Indian aircraft carriers are designed differently from their French counterparts.
In Goa, the French Carrier Strike Group is hosting a series of activities, including a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) at sea with the Indian Navy’s Western Fleet. Rear Admiral Jacques Mallard, Commander of the French Navy Strike Group, along with Rear Admiral Hugues Laine and commanding officers of the French naval ships, is scheduled to meet Rear Admiral Ajay D Theophilus, Flag Officer Commanding Goa Naval Area.
French naval ships FS Forbin and FS Alsace, which are also part of the Carrier Strike Group, are visiting Kochi.
