From waste to wonder, what’s Indore’s secret for Swachh Survekshan triumphs?

Indore retained the cleanest city tag for eighth year in a row among “Super Swachh League Cities” by President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday, as the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 Awards were announced on Thursday.

Indore also emerged as the cleanest city in the one-million-population category.

In the category of 3-10 lakh population, Noida was declared as the cleanest city, followed by Chandigarh and Mysore.

Super Swachh League (SSL) is a new entrant in the list which honours cities that consistently perform at the top levels of urban cleanliness.

While garbage is segregated into dry and wet waste everyday, Indore which holds a population of 35 lakh people, segregates waste into six different categories.

Every day, the city generates 700 tonnes of wet waste and 1,200 tonnes of dry waste.

Indore has a 100 per cent record on door-to-door collection, waste processing, cleanliness of water bodies, residential areas and public toilets. Moreover, there is 98 per cent segregation at source which means the waste is also segregated into dry and wet from office, house or shops.

Moreover, the city recycles 100 per cent of the waste generated.

The 2024–25 edition drew participation from over 4,500 urban local bodies and engaged approximately 14 crore citizens through digital campaigns and on-ground outreach.
