Calling for an unhindered humanitarian access in Gaza, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh on Wednesday night said civilians “must not die due to conflict” and stressed that Gaza must have access to food, fuel and essential supplies without hindrance.

Speaking at the Meeting of the NAM Ministerial Committee on Palestine, Singh said India’s position since October 7, 2023, has been consistent — condemning terrorism while urging an end to civilian suffering. “Hostages must be released; and a ceasefire must be in place immediately,” he told the gathering of ministers.

The minister reminded the forum that the NAM Committee on Palestine was first established under India’s presidency during the 1983 NAM Summit in New Delhi, underscoring the country’s historical role in supporting Palestinian rights.

“As one of the first nations to recognise the State of Palestine, India reaffirms the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination, national independence and sovereignty,” Singh said. “Our ultimate objective remains a negotiated two-State solution — a sovereign, independent, viable Palestine living side by side in peace and security with Israel.”

He highlighted India’s ongoing development cooperation and humanitarian assistance, noting that since October 2023, India has provided 135 metric tonnes of medicines and relief materials to Gaza. India also contributes $5 million annually to the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), with additional projects worth $40 million in health, education, and women’s empowerment underway.

Referring to recent diplomatic progress, Singh said India welcomes the first phase of President Trump’s peace plan, lauding the efforts of the United States, Egypt, and Qatar in facilitating dialogue. “At this juncture, it is important for peace and calm to hold. Everyone must honour their commitments,” he said.

“India stands ready to contribute towards realising the vision of a peaceful and stable Middle East and will continue to work constructively with its NAM partners,” Singh concluded.
