Government orders X to block 8,000 accounts
Social media platform X has received orders from the Indian Government mandating to block over 8,000 accounts within India.
The company stated that failure to comply could result in severe penalties, including substantial fines and potential imprisonment for local employees.
The orders encompass accounts belonging to international news organisations and prominent public figures on the platform.
X noted that in most instances, the government has not identified specific posts that allegedly violated Indian laws. Moreover, a significant portion of the targeted accounts were flagged without any accompanying evidence or justification, according to the company.
Notably, X has begun the process of withholding access to these accounts within India but made clear its strong disagreement with the government’s demands.
“Blocking entire accounts is not only unnecessary; it amounts to censorship of both existing and future content,” the company said, emphasising that the action contradicts the fundamental right to free speech.
“This is not an easy decision,” X added. “However, keeping the platform accessible in India is vital to ensuring that Indians continue to have access to information.”
While the company believes that publicising the executive orders is critical for transparency and accountability, it is currently restricted by Indian law from disclosing them.
X is reportedly exploring all available legal options but notes that its capacity to challenge the orders is limited compared to individuals located in India.
