Govt recommends enhancing public transport to cut carbon emission

In its cooling action plan, India has decided to phase out chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), a refrigerant used in all cooling equipment like air-conditions, by 2040.

To cut down on carbon emissions from the transport sector, the Environment Ministry, in its ‘India Cooling Action Plan’, has recommended enhancing public transport. CFCs are considered to be potent contributors to global warming. India, being a party to the Montreal Protocol, needs to phase-out Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) including CFCs, it said.

In the plan, the ministry has recommended that personalised vehicle demand will be reduced with the enhancement of mobility infrastructure like rail, metro and buses in Tier 2 and 3 cities.

The ministry has also planned to cut down emissions emanating from air conditioning used in vehicles.

The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising five eminent persons as trustees.
