Here is what Home ministry said on Nowgam police station explosion
The blast occurred around 11:20 p.m. on November 14 while police personnel were handling a large cache of explosives and chemicals recovered earlier this week during the investigation of a terror module case
A late-night explosion tore through Nowgam Police Station in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, killing nine people and injuring more than 30 others, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said in an official statement on Friday.
The blast occurred around 11:20 p.m. on November 14 while police personnel were handling a large cache of explosives and chemicals recovered earlier this week during the investigation of a terror module case.
The materials had been seized after Nowgam Police cracked a terror module based on leads obtained from a poster, officials said.
According to the MHA, the seized substances—volatile and highly sensitive—were being processed for forensic and chemical examination as part of standard operating procedure. Because of the volume of the recovery, the examination had been underway continuously for two days under expert supervision. The explosives were stored in a secure, open area inside the police station.
Despite the precautions, an accidental detonation occurred during the handling process, the ministry stated.
Among the dead are police personnel involved in the ongoing examination. Twenty-seven police officers, two revenue officials, and three civilians were injured in the blast and were immediately shifted to nearby medical facilities.
“The explosion caused severe structural damage to the police station building and also impacted several neighboring structures,” the official said.
Authorities have begun a detailed probe to determine the exact cause of the accident, but the MHA cautioned against speculation, saying further information would be released only after the investigation progresses.
“The Government stands in solidarity with the families of the deceased in this hour of grief,” the statement said.
