MEA: Only 19 Indians remain in Russian armed forces

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) today told the Lok Sabha that only 19 Indian nationals remain in the Russian armed forces. The MEA in written reply said, “According to available information, only 19 Indian nationals currently remain in the Russian armed forces.” The government has requested the Russian authorities concerned to provide an update on the whereabouts of the remaining Indian nationals in the Russian armed forces and also ensure their safety, well-being and early discharge. The MEA said most of the Indian nationals in the Russian armed forces have been discharged and several have been repatriated to India. Responding to a query from MP Naveen Jindal on India-Pakistan relations, Jaishankar said the ball was in Pakistan’s court. “We seek good, terrorism-free relations with all our neighbours, including Pakistan. It is for Pakistan to demonstrate a change in behaviour. If they do not, there will be consequences. Trade disruptions in 2019 were initiated by Pakistan,” he added.

On a question by AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi regarding Nepal’s introduction of a Rs 100 currency note featuring three disputed Indian territories, Jaishankar reiterated India’s firm stance on borders. “If any neighbour expects that such actions will alter India’s position, they are mistaken,” he said.

Regarding Myanmar, Jaishankar acknowledged challenges posed by the unrest along the border. “Due to the lack of governance on the other side, India has had to review its open border policy. We remain sensitive to the needs of border communities and are strengthening monitoring mechanisms,” he added.

The minister also highlighted India’s positive history of development projects with Bangladesh.
