He, however, said if the dam is built, it will damage the entire ecosystem and could dry up the Brahmaputra.

“Not much is known about the dam, but if it comes up, it will destroy the surrounding ecosystem and dry up the Brahmaputra,” Sarma told The Tribune.

The Chief Minister reiterated that the Centre is handling the matter. “As a state, we cannot engage with China, but the Indian Government has taken it up, and I am hopeful of a diplomatic solution,” he said.

On infiltration attempts from Bangladesh into Assam, Sarma said the border is largely secure. However, in some porous sections along the Brahmaputra, infiltration attempts are thwarted daily using surveillance gadgets like drones.

“Moreover, the people of Assam remain vigilant against infiltration, and we will not allow it,” he asserted.

Responding to a question on exiled ULFA leader Paresh Baruah’s alleged links with ISI-backed stakeholders in Bangladesh to revive militancy in Assam, Sarma said he personally believes Baruah wants peace.

“My personal view is that he wants peace and won’t destabilise Assam. After all, he wouldn’t bring violence to his own state,” he said.

Sarma was speaking to mediapersons after addressing a rally in Kokrajhar on Tuesday to mark five years of the Bodo Peace Accord.

Regarding the financial requirements of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), formed after the accord was signed between the Centre, the Assam Government and Bodo leaders on January 27, 2020, Sarma said Assam is financially self-sufficient.

“My vision is to make Assam a state of givers, not takers. We have enough funds to support the BTC and for overall development, and people are satisfied,” he stated.

On development plans for the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), Sarma highlighted its proximity to Bhutan and said infrastructure and tourism projects in the neighbouring country would benefit Bodoland, as it is just 8 km from the international border. He also mentioned his recent visit to Bhutan, where he held discussions with the King.

“The Bhutan Prime Minister will visit Assam next month for the ‘Advantage Assam’ business summit, which will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Sarma informed.
