In Assam, special revision replaces SIR; begins today

As there were special provisions for citizenship in Assam, special revision (SR) was being ordered in the state instead of special intensive revision (SIR), the EC said in a statement. “The verification of citizenship is already being done under the supervision of the Supreme Court and is in its final stages. Therefore, SR is being ordered in place of SIR," the EC said.

The Assembly elections in Assam are due in May next year and the state was excluded from the recently announced second phase of the SIR. Nine states and three UTs, including poll-bound Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Puducherry, are undergoing SIR in the second phase.

According to the Election Commission, the SR would start on November 18. A house-to-house verification of existing electors will be conducted by Booth Level officers (BLOs), who would carry along a pre-filled register to verify or correct voter information.

After capturing high-quality photos of electors and rationalisation of polling stations, the draft electoral roll will be published on December 27. The period for filing claims and objections will be between December 27 and January 22 (2026).
