The Bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha with a voice vote even as the Opposition staged a walkout soon after the Bill was introduced. PM Narendra Modi also congratulated people of Assam, saying establishment of the IIM would enhance education infrastructure and draw students as well as researchers from all over India to the state.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan called the passage of the Bill a historic milestone in Assam’s ascent as an eminent educational hub.
