The BJP on Friday accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of peddling fake narratives in an act of frustration and said the INDIA bloc in fact won the seats in which number of voters surged.

“The Congress is attempting to mislead the public and build a fake narrative by presenting false data about the increase in voter numbers during the Maharashtra elections. However, wherever voter numbers increased, the Congress and INDI alliance partners have won,” Union Environment minister and BJP leader Bhupender Yadav said a day after Rahul alleged that the EC was colluding with the BJP to “steal elections”.

Rahul claimed that one lakh fake voters in a single Assembly seat of Bangalore Central Lok Sabha segment turned the poll in favour of the BJP.

Yadav said Rahul was cutting the very branch on which he was sitting.

“The Congress is systematically attempting to weaken constitutional institutions to serve the interests of a single family, by building fake narratives. This narrative has been rejected by the people thrice, and it will meet the same fate in the future as well,” Yadav said.

He questioned Rahul’s intimidation of the EC officials yesterday when the Congress leader had said the Opposition would come to power and fix the culprits who colluded with the BJP.

“The language used by LoP Rahul Gandhi reflects arrogance towards the hardworking officers and staff of the EC. The Congress has adopted a ‘hit-and-run’ model. Its constant effort to block discussions in Parliament and to disrupt its functioning is unhealthy for democracy,” the minister said.

He said in 2024, the number of voters in the Maharashtra Assembly rolls was 9,71,41,289 and in the Lok Sabha, it was 9,30,61,760 – a difference of around 40 lakh.

“Rahul Gandhi exaggerated this by 60%, falsely claiming an increase of 1 crore voters. Those raising questions about Maharashtra are the very ones — Congress and its allies — who won most of the seats where voter numbers increased. This alone discredits Rahul Gandhi’s theory based on the election results themselves,” Yadav said.
