Indian crew member of capsized ship found dead

New Delhi, July 18

An Indian crew member of the capsized oil ship — MV Prestige Falcon — was found dead during the search operation at sea off Oman coast. A search in on to locate the remaining crew members — four Indians and two Sri Lankans.

Navy warship INS Teg had rescued nine mariners on Wednesday. The Maritime Security Centre of Oman said, “Tragically, one crew member was found deceased. The search and rescue operation continues for the remaining crew members.” The vessel had capsized about 25 nautical miles southeast of Ras Madrakah in Oman on July 15 and search and rescue efforts are underway since then.

Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh, in a post on X, said Indian Ambassador in Oman Amit Narang had informed that the eight Indians who were rescued by INS Teg had reached ashore and were being looked after.

The Navy has deployed its long-range maritime surveillance aircraft Boeing P8I and INS Teg in the search operation. INS Teg was undergoing an operational turnaround at a port in Oman and was sailed out at short notice to render assistance.

Boeing P8I has specific radars and area scanners. Pictures taken by it can be beamed live at control rooms in India and shared with the warship.
