Amid the uncertainty of transition of power in Bangladesh, the Indian High Commissioner at Dhaka, Pranay Verma, attended the swearing-in ceremony of Mohd Yunus-led interim government in the neighbouring country.

The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson said on Friday, “The Indian High Commissioner attended the swearing-in ceremony yesterday of the interim government in Bangladesh.”

On Thursday evening, the interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus took the oath of office as head of Bangladesh's interim government.

Yunus replaces former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was forced out on August 5 following weeks of violent street protests. Hasina is currently in India and negotiations are on on her seeking refuge in a third country.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent wishes to Yunus and spoke about protection of Hindus and minorities. Modi in a post on X said, “My best wishes to Professor Muhammad Yunus on the assumption of his new responsibilities. We hope for an early return to normalcy, ensuring the safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities.”

India, Modi said, remains committed to working with Bangladesh to fulfil the shared aspirations of both our peoples for peace, security and development.

Yesterday, while speaking on resumption of ties with Dhaka, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “Let’s wait for the interim government to take charge,” adding, “Let’s wait, it’s an evolving situation, it’s premature for me to comment…once it’s formed we can say something.”
