Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Sunday emphasised the need for India to achieve self-reliance in oilseed production. He also called on farmers, scientists and industry leaders to collaborate for strengthening the sector.

Addressing the 45th Rabi All-India Oilseeds Seminar in Agra, Birla urged all stakeholders to work together towards reducing India’s dependence on edible oil imports, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

He said while India’s demand for edible oil significantly exceeds domestic supply, the country has the potential to bridge the gap through innovation, scientific research and improved farming practices. “India is undergoing a transformation and our farmers must be the key drivers of this change. They should be empowered with fair prices for their produce, while ensuring high-quality oilseed production,” he said.

The Speaker stressed the importance of collaboration between agricultural scientists and the oil processing industry, urging them to work towards the development of climate-resilient, high-yield seed varieties. He also highlighted the need for research partnerships with universities and institutions to promote Indian oils and highlight their health benefits.

“Our soil and climate are highly conducive to oilseed cultivation, often requiring minimal irrigation. Government initiatives have also improved irrigation infrastructure, thereby enhancing our agricultural potential,” Birla said.

He also linked the growth of the oilseeds sector to the ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign, encouraging farmers to adopt modern technologies and leverage government schemes for better productivity and income. He called for greater entrepreneurial participation in organic farming, processing, packaging and distribution, emphasising the role of start-ups in boosting the industry, even in smaller regions.

He underscored the economic and nutritional value of indigenous oilseed crops, urging the public to embrace locally grown oils as part of a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle.

Birla expressed confidence that discussions held during the 45th Rabi All-India Oilseeds Seminar, organised by the UP Oil Millers Association, would help chart a new course for India’s oilseed industry.
