Maha moves SC against ex-DU prof’s acquittal
New Delhi, March 5
Hours after the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court acquitted former Delhi University professor, GN Saibaba, in a case relating to his alleged links with the banned CPI(Maoist), the Maharashtra Government on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court challenging his acquittal.
The High Court set aside the conviction of Saibaba (54) and five others under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in the alleged Maoist links case, saying the prosecution failed to prove the case against them beyond reasonable doubt. The High Court held as “null and void” the sanction procured by the prosecution to charge the accused under the UAPA.
A wheelchair-bound man suffering from physical disability, Saibaba is currently lodged in the Nagpur Central Jail since his arrest in the case in 2014.
