The Maldivian government has signed a $37 million deal with a Turkish company for the acquisition of military drones. This is seen as an attempt to reduce dependence on Indian military that conduct surveillance in the area.

The funds for the Turkish drones have been allocated from the state’s contingency budget, reported the local media which indicated that the Finance Ministry has released part of the payment. The pact with the Turkish company involves a payment plan in instalments.
