The Congress on Saturday launched a scathing attack on PM Narendra Modi over the renewed violence in Manipur, accusing him of abandoning the state and neglecting his constitutional duties.

“Manipur is once again engulfed in violence. For nearly two years, the people of the state have endured violence, murder, rape and displacement. Hundreds have died and thousands are homeless. Why has peace not been restored despite Central governance?” said Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

She questioned why, even after months of bloodshed, the PM had neither visited Manipur, met with representatives from the state, nor taken concrete steps to resolve the crisis. “Ensuring peace and security for citizens is the PM’s responsibility. Avoiding this is a failure of leadership,” she said.

Party leader Jairam Ramesh said the BJP, which “engineered” a majority in the 2022 Assembly elections, had failed to govern responsibly. Recalling the ethnic violence that began on May 3, 2023, he said, “Hundreds of innocent men, women and children were killed. Thousands were displaced, places of worship destroyed and the state left in flames.”
