Abbas Ansari is an MLA from the Mau segment, for which a byelection will be hold. He belongs to the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP), a BJP ally in the UP Government.

The disqualification came after he was sentenced to two years of imprisonment in a hate speech case.

The Representation of the People Act, 1951, provides for termination of legislative Assembly membership in case an MLA is sentenced to an imprisonment of two years or more.

Abbas was elected MLA in 2022 after he won the election on the ticket of Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party under the Samajwadi Party-led alliance. However, his party is now a BJP ally and party president Om Prakash Rajbhar is a UP Cabinet Minister.
