Multilateralism remains cornerstone of global climate action: India ahead of COP30
India expects rationalisation of indicators of adaptation from the climate summit
After a decade since the adoption of the Paris Agreement, India expects COP30 to send a message that multilateralism remains the cornerstone of global climate action.
Ahead of COP30, which will be held in Belem in Brazil from November 10, the Union Environment Ministry on Monday said that India, from the climate summit, expects rationalisation of indicators of adaptation.
Adaptation will be a central issue at the climate summit. Parties are expected to agree on adaptation indicators, and work to close the adaptation finance gap. Adaptation indicators are measurable variables that track progress in reducing vulnerability and increasing resilience to climate change.
“We want the indicators to be such that developing countries are not at the receiving end. The indicators should enable transparent tracking of finance, technology transfer and capacity building support from developed nations,” Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said.
COP30 this year will be held against a complex geopolitical backdrop, with the United States withdrawing from the Paris Agreement.
Yadav also said that Brazil this year has proposed a Global Ethical Stocktake (GES), which will be discussed at the climate conference.
Inspired by the Paris Agreement’s Global Stocktake, GES proposes a global and ethical dialogue on the climate crisis, bringing together social, cultural, spiritual, business, scientific, and political leaders. GES Circle aims to accelerate the implementation of the Paris Agreement.
The minister said that India expects the climate commitments to translate into implementation. Officials also said that consultations are going on India’s new nationally determined contributions (NDCs).
NDCs are climate action plans that every country makes under the Paris Agreement on how they will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and outline how each country will adapt to the impacts of climate change.
Countries are required to submit their third round of NDCs, for the 2031-2035 period this year. India is yet to submit NDC.
