Naval base at Minicoy, squadron of sub-hunting choppers commissioned

New Delhi, March 6

The Navy today, in separate ceremonies, commissioned the first squadron of submarine hunting helicopters MH 60-R and a new naval base at Minicoy Island.

The MH 60-R Squadron was commissioned in the presence of Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar at INS Garuda, Kochi. Addressing the gathering, the Admiral described the MH 60-R helicopter as one of the most potent multi-role choppers in the world, which would significantly enhance India’s maritime capabilities and secure national interests.

“With their cutting-edge sensors and multi-mission capabilities, MH 60-Rs will augment our maritime surveillance and anti-submarine warfare capabilities,” the Navy Chief said.

“The MH 60-R helicopters will be employed to protect our maritime epicentres and strengthen our efforts towards a safe and secure Indian Ocean Region. Their flexibility, reach and versatility will supplement our mission-based deployments and consequently, our combat readiness,” said the Navy Chief.

Meanwhile, INS Jatayu, a naval base at Minicoy Island in Lakshadweep, was also commissioned. This strengthens Navy’s foothold in Lakshdweep while extending its operational reach and sustenance in the region. INS Jatayu will function under the operational control of the Naval Officer-in-Charge (Lakshadweep), Southern Naval Command.
