This was the first of three such warships being built by GRSE under a Rs 21,833 crore contract as part of the Navy’s Project 17A.

The 149-metre-long, 6,670-tonne warship is largest and the most sophisticated frigates built by GRSE in its 65-year history as a Defence PSU. A significant portion of this value has fuelled MSMEs, start-ups, and OEMs while also contributing to employment generation.

Launched on December 14, 2020, Himgiri is equipped with BrahMos anti-ship and land-attack cruise missiles, along with Barak 8 anti-aircraft missiles, representing a major leap in naval strike and defensive capabilities, a statement of the GRSE said.

The warship is powered by a combination of diesel engine and gas turbines and is equipped with advanced AESA radar and modern combat systems. It is capable of anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare operations.
