No compromise on country’s interests: Rajnath on US tariffs

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday made a telling remark about the US tariffs, saying India will not compromise on the interests of farmers and small traders.

Speaking at an event hosted by a media house, he said the government prioritised the interests of farmers and small traders and would not compromise on them.

"India does not consider anyone its enemy. There cannot be a compromise on our country’s welfare at any cost. No matter how much pressure is exerted, India will continue to give the highest priority to the interests of its farmers, small businessmen, shopkeepers, livestock keepers and common citizens," the minister said.

A day ahead of the bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, Rajnath said there were no permanent friends or foes for India, but only permanent interests. India's foreign policy seems to be rapidly shifting amid trade tensions with the United States over tariffs and improvement in relations with neighbouring China.

Speaking about the defence sector, the minister said self-reliance should not be confused with isolation. “This is not protectionism. It is about sovereignty. When a nation of youth, energy, technology and possibilities moves towards self-reliance, the world pauses and takes note. This is the strength that enables India to withstand global pressures and emerge stronger,” he added.
