Of 193 UN members only 3 backed Pakistan, rest supported India on Op Sindoor: Jaishankar
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday told the Lok Sabha that of the 193 member countries of the United Nations, only three -- besides Pakistan -- opposed India's military operation following the Pahalgam terror attack, while the rest stood firmly with India.
Detailing the diplomatic build-up to Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, Jaishankar said, “Between April 25 and the launch of the operation, there were 27 calls at the Prime Minister's level, several at my level, and we received 35-40 letters of support. Our objective was to shape the narrative and prepare global diplomacy in support of our right to self-defence.”
India's aim, he said, was twofold: to deliver a message to terrorists and to warn Pakistan against continuing its support for cross-border terrorism. “On the morning of May 7, I believe that message went loud and clear,” Jaishankar declared, referring to the military strikes.
The EAM noted that the operation targeted nine sites across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, believed to be terror launch pads. “Our actions were focused, measured, and non-escalatory. We fulfilled the Prime Minister's commitment to the nation -- those responsible would be held accountable,” he said, adding that the UN Security Council's April 25 statement had backed India's position.
Jaishankar hit out at the Opposition for questioning the operation. "When I hear people across the aisle doubt our actions, I ask, did any of you imagine Bahawalpur and Muridke could be hit the way they were? You ruled it out after 26/11," he said.
Highlighting India’s message to the world, Jaishankar said all countries were told five things: India was exercising its right to self-defence, the May 7 targets were known terror infrastructure, there would be no mediation between India and Pakistan, there would be no tolerance of nuclear blackmail, and any ceasefire would only be considered upon a formal request through the designated DGMO channel.
Jaishankar also listed the wide-ranging global support India received. "QUAD and BRICS both condemned the Pahalgam attack and referred to cross-border terrorism. Russian President Vladimir Putin personally wrote to our President, saying this brutal crime has no justification," he said.
Referring to diplomatic achievements, he said the US Department of State’s July 17 designation of The Resistance Front (TRF) as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation and the successful extradition of 26/11 accused Tahawwur Rana were outcomes of sustained Indian diplomacy.
“People ask, how successful is our foreign policy? I say -- TRF is designated, and Tahawwur Rana is finally extradited -- because of us,” Jaishankar concluded.
