Opposition to push for special Parl session on Pahalgam attack

The Opposition is preparing to push for a special session of Parliament in the aftermath of the terror attack on tourists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, sources told The Tribune on Sunday. The Congress has reportedly built a consensus with other political parties on the matter.

Congress insiders said the party has approached the top leadership of almost all Opposition parties, and a “process” has now been initiated to draft a joint letter to the Narendra Modi-led Centre seeking a special session to discuss the Pahalgam attack.

“We are expected to formalise the process by this evening. The letter is likely to be sent to the Prime Minister by late evening today or by tomorrow (April 28) morning,” a source said.

In their outreach to other Opposition parties, Congress leaders are also holding discussions on the government’s possible next steps following the attack, sources said.

Earlier, former Union Minister and Rajya Sabha member Kapil Sibal had also called for a special Parliament session to deliberate on the issue and gather suggestions from all sides. He said a unanimous resolution should be passed to reflect the sentiment of the nation before the world.
