Piyush Goyal to address Lok Sabha on 25% US import tariffs, India's trade response

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is set to make a statement in the Lok Sabha on Thursday regarding the 25% import tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump on Indian goods, a senior official confirmed.

Goyal is expected to address the House around 4 pm, outlining the government’s potential response and providing updates on the ongoing India-US trade negotiations. Parliamentary proceedings have been adjourned until the scheduled statement.

The development comes after Trump declared that starting August 1, the US will impose a 25% tariff on imports from India. Additionally, he announced penalties on India for purchasing oil and military equipment from Russia.

On Tuesday, Trump stated that imports from India could face tariffs ranging from 20 to 25 per cent, citing the lack of a finalised trade agreement between the two countries. In April, he had initially announced increased tariff rates as part of efforts to reduce the US trade deficit, but later scaled them back to 10 per cent to allow room for negotiations.

The India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement, first announced in February 2025, aims to double trade volume to USD 500 billion by 2030.

Five rounds of talks have been completed so far, and a US delegation is scheduled to visit India on August 25 for the sixth round.
