New Delhi, January 27
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday urged presiding officers of state assemblies to find solutions to issues related to tainted lawmakers being eulogised and also on dealing with MLAs and MPs who fail to uphold dignity of assemblies and Parliament.
PM Modi said this in his opening remarks at the All-India Conference of Presiding Officers, which opened in Mumbai.
In his video address, the Prime Minister emphasised the need for accountability.
“In the past, allegations of corruption against a member of the House would lead to their ostracisation from public life. However, we now witness public glorification of convicted corrupt individuals, which is detrimental to the integrity of the executive, the judiciary and the Constitution,” he remarked.
PM Modi stressed the importance of discussing and providing concrete suggestions on this matter during the conference.
He lamented the fact that parties, instead of curtailing the objectionable behaviour of their members, come out in their support.
“The conduct of members in the House and the conducive environment therein directly impact the productivity of the Assembly. Concrete suggestions emanating from this conference will be instrumental in enhancing productivity,” he said further.
