Mauritius commemorates it's National Day on March 12th every year. The day marks the anniversary of Mauritius's independence from British rule in 1968. It also commemorates the country's transition to a republic within the Commonwealth in 1992.

During his address to the country's Parliament, Ramgoolam said,"...I have great pleasure to inform the House that following my invitation, Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, has kindly agreed to be the Guest of Honour for our National Day celebrations."

Maldives PM Rangoolam added, "It is indeed a singular privilege for our country, to host such a distinguished personality who is doing us this honour, inspite of his very tight schedule and inspite of his recent visits to Paris and the United States. He has agreed to be here as our special guest."

The visit of Modi is a testimony of the close relations between our two nations, he said.

Last year, President Droupadi Murmu had attended the national day celebrations of Mauritius. She was the Chief Guest for the event.

The invitation from Mauritius to Indian PM reflects the strong ties between the two countries.
