PM Modi to visit Manipur on Saturday, his first since unrest
After days of suspense, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) on Friday officially announced Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Manipur on Saturday, where he will unveil development projects worth Rs 8,500 crore in the northeastern state. This marks PM Modi's first visit to Manipur since ethnic violence erupted in May 2023, leading to significant loss of life and property. Manipur has been under President's Rule since February 13.
Tomorrow, the Prime Minister will visit Mizoram and lay the foundation stone and inaugurate multiple development projects worth over Rs 9,000 crore at Aizawl, at around 10 am. He will also address a public function. Thereafter, he will visit Manipur and lay the foundation stone of multiple development projects worth over Rs 7,300 crore at Churachandpur at around 12:30 PM. He will also address the gathering on the occasion. Further, he will inaugurate various projects worth over Rs 1,200 crore at Imphal, at around 2:30 pm and address a public function.
The PMO statement said, "In line with his commitment to inclusive, sustainable and holistic development of Manipur, Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone of multiple development projects. The projects include Manipur Urban Roads, drainage and asset management improvement project worth over Rs 3,600 crore; 5 National Highway projects worth more than Rs 2,500 crore; Manipur Infotech Development (MIND) project, Working Women Hostels at 9 locations, among others."
Modi will also inaugurate multiple development projects worth more than Rs 1,200 crore at Imphal. These include the Civil Secretariat at Mantripukhri; IT SEZ Building and New Police Headquarters at Mantripukhri; Manipur Bhawans at Delhi and Kolkata; and Ima Markets, unique all women's markets, in four districts.
Manipur is one of the three northeastern states PM Modi will visit, alongside Mizoram and Assam.
Overall, Modi will be on a five-state visit from September 13 to 15, covering Mizoram, Manipur, Assam, West Bengal and Bihar. Through the trip, he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of projects worth over Rs 71,850 crore.
In Bihar, the PM will launch the National Makhana Board. He will also inaugurate the new terminal building of Purnea airport, taking the number of airports in the state to four, and lay the foundation stone and inaugurate various development projects worth around Rs 36,000 crore at Purnea.
In Mizoram, Modi will unveil and inaugurate multiple development projects worth over Rs 9,000 crore besides inaugurating the Bairabi-Sairang New Rail line connecting Mizoram to the Indian Rail network for the first time. The PM will participate in celebrations marking the 100th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika in Guwahati, Assam, and inaugurate and lay foundation stones for projects worth over Rs 18,350 crore in Assam. In Kolkata, he will inaugurate the 16th Combined Commanders’ Conference-2025.
