Rajya Sabha adjourned till 2 pm amid Opposition protest over Bihar SIR

The Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned twice on Monday as Opposition protests over various issues, including Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, continued to rock the House.

As soon as the House reassembled for the Question Hour at 12 noon, various Opposition MPs were on their feet and Sushmita Dev (TMC) trooped into the Well, and sought to raise various issues. As the din continued, the proceedings were adjourned again till 2 pm.

As many as 26 notices under Rule 267 were submitted by the members from Opposition parties for discussion on Bihar SIR, attacks on Bengalis in other states and on several other issues. Opposition members Rajiv Shukla, Tiruchi Shiva, Renuka Chowdhary and various others demanded discussion on Bihar SIR, while TMC’s Sagarika Ghosh, Dola Sena, Sukhendu Shekhar Ray sought discussion on atrocities on Bengalis in other states.

The Deputy Chairman Harivansh refused to allow the notices which resulted in a chaos in the House with Opposition members, particularly from the Congress, came close to the Well and raised slogans in support of their demands.

With Opposition MPs unrelenting despite repeated requests from the Chair, Harivansh adjourned the House proceedings.

Earlier, the House proceedings commenced with the oath-taking of two new members from Tamil Nadu — M Dhanapal and IS Inbadura — both belonging to the AIADMK.
