A heated exchange between Rajya Sabha Opposition Leader Mallikarjun Kharge and Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar — amid the backdrop of the Opposition’s no-confidence motion against him for alleged partisanship — led to a chaotic ruckus in the Upper House, resulting in its adjournment for the day.

The clash began with Dhankhar asserting his stance, saying, “I am a farmer’s son, I will not show weakness. I will sacrifice my life for my country. You (Opposition) have only one job 24 hours a day, why is a farmer’s son sitting here…look what you are saying. I have tolerated a lot…you have the right to bring a motion but you are insulting the Constitution.”

Kharge countered by highlighting his own humble origins, stating, “You are encouraging the (BJP) members to speak against members of other parties… I am also the son of a farmer. I have faced more challenges than you. You are insulting our party leaders, you are insulting the Congress… We have not come here to listen to praises showered on you, we have come here to talk about people’s problems.”

Dhankhar accused Kharge of deviating from due process and damaging his image. Addressing Kharge directly, Dhankhar said, “…I have tolerated it enough. Today farmers are not just confined to farming. I request you to take out time and meet me. If not then, I will come and meet you.”

The clash intensified when several Opposition members alleged that television cameras were not broadcasting Kharge’s speech during the proceedings, fuelling tensions. As the situation escalated, a ruckus broke out, leading to the adjournment of the House.
