Russian Buddhist delegation in Delhi to seek cooperation, bring sacred relic

A delegation from Russia arrived in New Delhi to discuss cooperation between Buddhist communities of the two countries.The Russian Embassy in New Delhi said the visit would include a discussion on bringing the remains of Buddha Shakyamuni (a relic sacred to all Buddhists) and the installation of a statue of Buddha Shakyamuni in the city of Elista in Russia.

It looks to bring about cooperation between the two countries’ Buddhist communities and organizations, as well as the regions of Russia and India.

The Russian delegation hails from Kalmyk Republic, which is located just south-west of Kazakhstan and in the north-west of the Caucasian mountain range.

The visit is part of preparations for the ‘Third International Buddhist Forum’ to be held in Elista from September 25 to 28.

The delegation includes Geshe Yonten, president of the Central Spiritual Board of Buddhists of Russia, and other officials from the Republic of Kalmykia.
