Speed up criminal law rollout: Shah to MP CM
Over six months after the three criminal laws were made operational across the country, the Centre has been pushing for their speedy and complete rollout in all states, especially those governed by the BJP.
In the last few weeks, Home Minister Amit Shah has held meetings with the chief ministers of BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Haryana to review the status of implementing the laws.
On Friday, Shah met Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and took up the same issue. On January 7, he had held a similar meeting with Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, seeking implementation of the laws by March 31 in the seven police commissionerates of Varanasi, Lucknow, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Agra and Kanpur, and as soon as possible in the remaining parts of the state.
Unlike UP, Shah didn’t set a deadline for other states. Analysts said this could be due to the fact that UP was a politically crucial state and home to PM Narendra Modi’s constituency Varanasi.
Shah said the CM should review the progress of implementing the laws on a monthly basis, the Chief Secretary every 15 days and the DGP on a weekly basis.
