Supreme Court allows cleaning of ‘wuzukhana’ of Gyanvapi mosque at Varanasi
New Delhi, January 16
The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed cleaning of the ‘wuzukhana’ of the Gyanvapi mosque at Varanasi, where a Shivling was reported to have been found during a survey in May last year.
A Bench led by CJI DY Chandrachud allowed an application filed by the Hindu plaintiffs, who have been demanding the right to worship the deities on the mosque premises.
The top court directed that the cleaning be done under the supervision of the Varanasi district collector.
The Hindu plaintiffs sought cleaning of the ‘wazukhana’ on the grounds that dead fish was found in it.
The Muslim side, which didn’t oppose it, said it had filed a similar plea before the Varanasi district administration.
