UK’s Southampton varsity to set up India campus

Becomes 1st foreign institute to do so under NEP

The University of Southampton has become the first foreign University to be issued a Letter of Intent (LoI) to establish a campus in India under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) in November 2023 had come up with regulations for “setting up and operation of campuses of foreign higher educational institutions in India”.

UGC Chairman M Jagadish Kumar had constituted a Standing Committee to examine the matters related to the setting up of and operation of campuses of Foreign Higher Educational Institutions in India (FHE)I.

The online proposals of FHEIs for setting up and operation of their campuses in India were invited through a portal. The university submitted the proposal for opening of a branch campus in Gurugram, which was approved by the standing committee.
