New Delhi, August 9

The Union Government on Friday said the Constitution as drafted by BR Ambedkar had no provision for creamy layer to exclude advantaged sections of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and the NDA Government will remain committed to the Constitution.

Effectively ruling out creamy layer for SCs and STs, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said "The Union Cabinet chaired by PM Narendra Modi discussed the recent Supreme Court observations on SC/ST creamy layer in detail. Union Cabinet’s well thought-out decision is that SC and ST reservation should be as per the Constitution drafted by BR Ambedkar. The Constitution does not provide for creamy layer for SCs and STs.”
