Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar today said the Uniform Civil Code must be realised and the country could no longer be influenced by narrow considerations of voting patterns in the matter.

The VP’s comments came a day after the Uttarakhand Cabinet cleared rules to implement the UCC that the Assembly had passed in February 2024. Interacting with students of the NIT, Raipur, the IIT, Bhilai, and the IIM, Raipur, at Raipur today, Dhankhar said, “The UCC is in the Directive Principles of State Policy. An obligation has been cast on governance to have law, to have the UCC. One state — Uttarakhand — has done it. How can you object to something which is written in our Constitution? We cannot be influenced day in and day out, only with the narrow considerations of voting pattern. Framers of the Constitution were wise, focused. They gave us certain fundamentals, but they indicated that as democracy matures, as we progress, we must also realise for our people certain goals, one of them is the UCC.”

He also called for illegal migration to stop saying, “It has become a festering wound (nasoor) and is assuming unmanageable dimensions.”
